Authentic writing_One of my writing class

Here is one of the writing class I did, this is class of 2 students, both of them are beginner chinese language learner, both of them were struggling with writing at the time, so we end up did this story writing unit to build more interest and confidence in writing.

Engage students who was unwilling to write through authentic writting experience

Grade Level: 2-3 Student's level: Chinese as foreign language Unit of Inquiry: How we express ourselves ​Unit Duration: 3-5 weeks, 45 minutes/day Resourse & apprach involved: Photoshop, movie maker, color pencil and paper and story board worksheets. Process:

  1. Each of the students will choose one of the box cat and give them names and different personality. I will print the box cat out and they will make it into a 3D cat.

  2. For each of the cats they have to come up with a introduction and a story, then write it down in both Chinese and English, they can get a new character after they completed one story. For each of the story they will choose a background picture and put their cats on it when it appears on the book. The story writting is through group work. They came up with story together and write it into both Chinese and English together.

  3. By the end of the book, I have also put each of the story together with the help of movie maker and made it into a short video. Both of the students will come up with a dialog for the story and dubbing for their box cats.

Self-reflection: Throughout this unit, students has been largely engaged in the entire learning process. Besides the improving of the writting and reading skills, they had also overcomed and learned some skills for group working and communicating. During the writting and dubbing process, they had also learned the difference between written language and oral language. It has been quite a successful class consider the fact that both of the students has not only learned a great amount of vocabulary but also build the interest for writting. Some problem has also appeared during the classes. First of all, such a unit requires a great amout of time and effort from teacher, I was lucky to have a class with only 2 students, that's the only way this can happen. Secondly, as their English level was way beyond their Chinese level, they usually came up with great stories in English but turned out to be very hard for them to write it in Chinese. Next time if I will do this unit again, I think I will learned to limit some vocabulary or senses for them to write so that we can focus on more to use what they already know rather then learn many new words that was too hard for them and forget after few month. During the process should also be careful with the correcting part during their writting, over correcting will cause their impatience toward the entire writting process.
